Failed at 7 months. Review may contain raving.

For those undeterred by my rating to consider purchasing, allow me to talk about the functionality. This is an average microwave in every regard. It doesn’t do anything fancy beyond just varying the cooking times and powers for all settings.A near deal-breaker for my household is the ability to TURN OFF BEEPING, and this microwave DOES NOT let you do that. Every single appliance made these days wants to beep at you, stressing their own importance. My household has noise sensitivity issues. About 5 years ago, microwaves started to appear that let you disable beeping if desired. Then for some reason, this feature has disappeared from so many makes and manufacturers. It is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to find a countertop model that lets you set this now. Luckily I’m a Controls Engineer so I’m no stranger to circuits and wiring and can take care of that, though I certainly prefer not to. Every microwave should let you decide if you want beeps, how many, how loud, and if you want reminder beeps too. Seriously, this isn’t hard to program!! OK, . Despite all that, I did not have much choice but to buy a beeping model. When thawing frozen items, it typically wants you to flip the item over during the process (depending on multiple factors). This causes more beeping and instead of seeing the time remaining, the display sticks on “TURN” wanting you to turn it over. I know this is recommended to thaw evenly, but I wish it could have been turned off.Sadly this microwave died at the 7-month point. It works on occasion: it shuts off randomly yet the timer continues to countdown as if it is still operating. The internal light flickers all the time. It also grows so hot on the outside it can barely be touched when this happens. Something is shorting or grounding out, which is a huge safety concern. In shipping, a large dent happened on one of the back corners… the corner opposite of the electronics portion. I’ve been leery that a fall large enough to cause that, may have caused much more. It seemed to work fine at the time so I didn’t bother with trying to return for damage. I guess lesson learned there. I personally will stick with store shopping for my larger appliances now when possible.

    Missing a Part – Update

We ordered a replacement microwave from Amazon. The second one was also missing the “Convenience Guide” decal shown in pictures and the owner’s manual. GE advised they would not ship us the part since they do not sell it. Amazon provided good customer service but GE has shown disdain for customers.GE answered my question about the product with false information. They acknowledge that they stopped including the Convenience Guide decal in later 2023 and information is in the owner’s manual. That is not true. The owner’s manual in the microwaves we received advises to owner to see the “Convenience Guide” decal for full instructions. I have “reported” this answer to Amazon. The lack of user instructions could turn into a safety issue. GE should amend their owner’s manual to include the missing information.

FIRE HAZARD! I am filing a complaint with the CPSC and you should too!

We purchased in in late Nov 2017. It is now mid March 2018 ( so 3 1/2 months) and I am noticing a burnt wiring smell every time we cook. I hope there is some sort of warranty. I had bought this model from Lowes in 2010 and it lasted me 6 years. Our original one was working fine but the kids had put a dent in the door by roughhousing so we needed to replace it. Needless to say, I bought the same model over again because I expected the same quality and this is very disappointing. It appears there is a manufacturing defect and others are having the same issue. I am worried for our safety with this one in the house. I will update my review once I see how the process of any warranty claim goes.UPDATE: contacted the manufacturer and they told me I should cut the cord off of it and throw it out. They said they will issue a refund of what I paid for it but only after I purchase another GE branded microwave and submit proof of the new purchase. They have told me they will not reimburse for the current purchase price, only what I originally paid which was a sale price and now I’d have to pay $30 more to replace it. I am filing a complaint with the US consumer product safety commission and I encourage anyone else who is having this issue to also do the same. It takes about 20 minutes to phone in the complaint and get it all documented with them. While I understand that defective products are a fact of life, that does not excuse these giant corporations to be able to get away with this without making their consumer completely whole again.

Great, Easy-to-Use Microwave that dies way too soon..

Updated review: I thought this was a great microwave, but it didn’t last. It died just days after the product warranty expired, although my previous version lasted for 11 years. I’d looked into repairing the old one and decided that it just wasn’t worth my time and money. So I made the same decision about the this one.I replaced it with a Samsung with two button technology – push “potato,” then push “start.” Easy for me and my disabled family member has been able to learn to use it.Ignore the former good review below.Great microwave. We use the microwave mostly to heat up frozen meals and bake/nuke potatoes. The sensor cooking function cooks potatoes perfectly and heats frozen meals perfectly. This microwave has one button controls – to nuke a potato, you just push the potato button. Super easy, which we need for a family member with a disability. Before I bought this, I bought a different microwave with “inverter” technology, which required multiple steps to nuke a potato, including turning the potato over midway through the cooking process. Way too complicated for me, and completely impossible for one member of our family.I love the “add 30 seconds” button, which I prefer to the “add one minute button” on many other microwaves.Re the comments in other reviews re the interior paint chipping: I had an earlier model of this microwave that lasted for 11 years and never had a problem with chipping paint. I don’t know if this makes a difference, but I normally leave the microwave door open a bit after using it to let the moisture from cooking dissipate before I close the door.

    Bad product, worse customer service

I purchased this item because I thought I could trust the G.E. brand. After less than a month of use, the microwave began cutting out – the timer would continue to count down but everything else stopped working. Sometimes this would happen after only 10 seconds of cooking. After a little research I discovered this was a known problem with this microwave, and the fix was to go turn off and turn back on the house breakers. Considering that other appliances plugged into the same outlet worked just fine and none of my breakers were tripped, I concluded that was just an excuse for G.E. to keep from having to replace the unit or refund my money. As it is, it is now beyond the 30 day return date and I’m now stuck with a $140 brand new microwave that I’ll be lucky to sell at yard sale for $20. I’ve since purchased a Sharp microwave which I’ve had absolutely no problems with. I’m very disappointed with both Amazon and the seller for their extremely inflexible return policy on an item that simply does not work. If I could give this rating 0 stars I would have

I really liked this microwave but it has a real short life …

I really liked this microwave but it has a real short life span. I purchased it in November of 2014. It died in June of 2016. That is about 18-19 months. I expect a major appliance to last a lot longer. That’s why I gave it 3 stars. I would have given it 5 stars if it had a longer life span but the early death wiped out 2 stars and it could’ve taken out 3 but I felt generous.

    Good, basic unit

This microwave is a basic device which does its job well. It is priced very competitively and arrived well packed and in perfect condition. My only criticism comes from a keypad which is a little hard to read. We keep our unit though in an under-counter cabinet. If it was on a counter top, there would be no issue. It has adequate power, and heats food evenly and efficiently.

This replaced similar model with cooking sensor. Good appearance. Arrived from vendor with defective door. Required TWO (2) service calls before door was fixed enabling the machine to be used. However the GE Answer Center was very helpful and prompt arranging repair service.I expect the problem was caused by poor handling by the vendor or shipper.

    FAILED after 2 years!!

Failed after 2 years 3 months. Worked great up until that time then the oven quit and the timer just kept going. Still looks new. Now I have to pay to recycle it. Thanks GE for building CRAP. I had a Gold Star (now LG) brand microwave since the mid 1980s that I gave to my son to make way for this one. It still works great after 25+ years. GE 2+ years and dead. NICE.

    Terrible Microwave

Bought the microwave in March 2014. Today (May 17, 2015) it stopped working – light is on – the turntable does not turn and it does not heat the food. Don’t buy – unless you want to keep it for only a little over a year! By the way that is just over the year on the original warranty.

I ordered this microwave in September 2017. I used it 3-4 times a day for two months. Then it started smelling like burning plastic when it ran for more than about 30 seconds. I contacted GE assuming it was under warranty. Thy sent out a technician to have a look. He said the problem was a fault transformer and that I should not use the microwave because it might start a fire. He did not have a replacement part with him, nor was he able to provide a replacement microwave. I am still working with GE on a replacement.

DO NOT BUY – DIED WITHIN 3 MONTHS

This microwave was purchased for our grandmother in late Dec. 2017 for Christmas and DIED in mid March – started smelling like wires burning then popped and died. OF COURSE this was after the return window. This is clearly a piece of junk and shouldn’t be sold on Amazon. DO NOT BUY this from any provider and especially not the Amazon.com provider as they have no return policy, no warranty information that is easily accessible, and no way of getting support for their crappy product.

    Expired after 1 year

The buttons are difficult for older people not only to see but to use, the “put food in” safety feature is annoying, the defrost won’t let you add additional time once the process has started if you go by weight. And it all together died 1 year after purchase. The machine looks brand new but it doesn’t work, it’s going to a landfill somewhere. What a waste, I won’t buy another GE product, they have built in obsolescence.

    Nice looking microwave

Came nicely packaged. It is heavy and challenge if you live alone to get it out of the box and onto your surface location. I had to lift it above my shoulders to slip it into the alcove I have for a microwave. BUT I did it and felt gratified to do it. WISH it came with a manual. I still read them. This microwave has two features I didn’t expect…you have to program the time to cook, reheat, etc BEFORE you place the food into the machine. I put the food in first and it didn’t “start” when I pressed that button. Once I made the change it worked great. 2nd you can keep it plugged in without “vampire electricity” being wasted. I should state I do NOT use the microwave as a clock. IF you do, than the last sentence is not valid. Setting up the clock you must keep it plugged in, AND you will be using a bit of electricity. Admittedly not a lot. But I happen to be one of those that try to keep a low “profile” for reduction of utility bills.

Good BUT This is my third one in less than 6 years!

I love my GE microwave. When it works- it works great. There is a problem with all of them however. This is my third one in 6 years. The last one lasted 20 months. The problem seems to lie in the door latch. If I set the microwave for 1 minute sometimes it just cuts off 20 seconds into warming. Other times it says close door, and the door is closed. Sometimes it seems as if it is running, but it actually is only making noise. All of this has to do with the door- and the latch. It gets kind of expensive having to replace my microwave every two years. At some point I will have to change brands, I guess. Cause this GE model is not reliable. I have stuck with it because he cooks so well, is so easy to operate, and before it starts to malfunction you just fall in love with it. ( I have always kept my microwave VERY clean. I can only imagine what would happen if kids were using it and getting sticky stuff around that latch. Guess it would last even less time. )

    Uneven heating

I purchased this larger size because it was the closest to an older GE model that had all the interior paint peel off. I could have used a smaller size for the space but from what I read, you really need over 1000Kwh in order to heat evenly. So I went with this but it does not heat evenly unless it has been run a few times first. For instance, my oatmeal needs to go in twice, and then the cat chicken twice, and by the time I am ready to reheat my tea, I can get it on one try. I am working on increasing the duration the first time but also trying not to overcook the food.

    Clunkey

The proof is hopefully many years away, but 1st impressions have been underwhelming. For starts, the black on dark gray button labels are difficult to read, and the overall button panel looks slightly inelegant. The door opens and closes harder than expected. On closing, a loud metallic clunking noise radiates, much like doors on old basic trucks. On opening, the button requires much pressure, even sometimes moving the whole unit slightly backwards.
